First Aylesbury tenant moves to a new home!

She lived on Big Bradenham for two years and has moved to a new property in the Blakes Road development in Peckham. Bridgette is an administrator at the Royal Free Hospital She lives with her 15 year old daughter, Lestina who attends Harris Academy for girls in Bermondsey.

Describe what life was like on the Aylesbury Estate?
Bridgette: It was scary for me coming home late at night. I used to work late shifts and coming home was very frightening for me. We were both living in a one bedroom which was very inconvenient.
Lestina: It was ok but you couldn’t go downstairs to play because the estate was so big and the lift didn’t work half of the time. It’s a good thing they are breaking the buildings down because it will look more attractive and people will want the houses.

Do you feel the rehousing team were helpful?
Bridgette: I can say since the start of the regeneration, the rehousing team and the Aylesbury regeneration team were very helpful, especially when it came to the actual rehousing. The rehousing team really understood my situation. I found the moving process quite straightforward. I didn’t have any obstacles because when I was sent the form I filled it out and returned it to the rehousing team. My details were checked and I was already on the housing list. And that’s how it went on. They sent me the necessary paperwork and I was sent a letter. I got offered the accommodation and that was it.

Do you feel the rehousing team were accessible?
Bridgette: During the whole process I was able to contact the rehousing team all the time and they were very helpful. Hema Vashi was my main contact for the rehousing team.

How are you finding your new home – what do you like most about it?
Lestina: The new home is way better than the one we had before because everything is brand new and a lot of things we did not expect are there especially the shower, we didn’t expect the shower. The house feels comfortable and you feel happy in it. Everything is secure. No one can come and break in.

What type of things impressed you in the house?
Lestina: My bedroom because it was really big. All my friends said that the bedroom is big. The bathroom is good as well and we have a boiler. I don’t mind the open plan kitchen because it is easier to access.
Bridgette: I like it because it is a flat on the ground floor and there are two double bedrooms. The only thing I don’t like is the open plan because people can see what you are cooking but I do like that it has a patio.

How have you settled into the new area?
Lestina: The area is really fantastic, it is the best area that I have been in so far. The first day we came here the neighbours were so nice and friendly. They came and welcomed us into the neighbourhood. They introduced us to the people in the area which was really nice, because some people in other areas are not friendly and I was expecting them not to be friendly here.

How will the change in location affect you and your daughter?
Bridgette: There has been no change. The only change is the bus route because at the southwest corner of the Aylesbury there are lots of buses, but from Blakes Road there is only one bus route which is the 343.

How informed have you been about the regeneration?
Bridgette: Since I moved into Bradenham in 2006, I have been right on top of things with the regeneration. I have been in constant communication with the regeneration team who have been giving me feedback and updates about everything that’s going on.  I also read the newsletters that come through.

What benefits do you think the Aylesbury regeneration will bring to the people in the area?
Bridgette: It will improve people’s lives by giving them better accommodation; good transport links and it will also give them more open space.
Lestina: It will be a better environment to live for the young and older people. And if it is more spacious, children will be able to go out and play and socialise and have barbeques.
