Southwark residents can now see what new properties to replace the Aylesbury Estate will look like and walk through a full-size model of a home.
For three weeks residents on the south London estate had the opportunity to look around a version of the new homes being built in the first phase of the regeneration programme.
The Show Home Exhibition which was launched on July 9, 2007 also featured the Neighbourhood Charter - a document outlining residents’ and key stakeholders’ aspirations for their new community.
There was information on how the work on the estate will be carried out in phases, details on the first section to be developed, and general information about the entire Aylesbury programme.
The exhibition took place from July 11 - July 28 in the Amersham Youth Centre on the corner of Inville Road and Thurlow Street and includes a range of free weekend events for the community.
The 70 m sq two-bedroom home has been designed by architects Levitt Bernstein Associates and is furnished to give residents an indication of the space they can expect in the new buildings. The configuration of the show home changed over the next three weeks, with partition walls being added so people can see different versions of the living space.
And on July 28, all the furniture in the show home were raffled off to people who have visited the exhibition.
The Neighbourhood Charter was also launched on the same day. The charter outlines residents' wishes for the new area, and has been put together by the Neighbourhood Team, a stakeholder group that has been formed comprising estate residents and organisations that operate in the Aylesbury area.
Cllr Richard Thomas, Southwark Council's executive member for regeneration, said: “One of the best things about the Aylesbury is the internal space standards. Residents asked for a show home so they could see the space proposed in the new homes.. The Show Home Exhibition is a result of all the hard work that Aylesbury residents and Southwark Council have been doing to move the regeneration scheme forward.
"I am proud to be able to show people round a working model of the future of this area, and very pleased that the initial reaction of residents was so positive."
Further events as part of the Show Home Exhibition include:
Saturday July 14:
12pm: Find out about the history of the Aylesbury - local writer John Constable led people on a fascinating walk around the area giving a glimpse into Walworth’s history over the last 200 years.
