Area Action Plan

Since 2007 we have been putting together an Area Action Plan (AAP) a comprehensive planning and delivery framework for the new neighbourhood. This has recently been adopted by Southwark Council.  Residents have been involved in every aspect of the plan and helped shape the plans for their new community.  The AAP will be submitted to government in spring 2009 for approval.

The AAP is focused on the estate itself, examines the long-term needs of residents in the estate – the economy, employment, housing, shopping, transport, open spaces, and the overall look of the area. It considers what physical changes are needed in the area that will make a positive improvement to all of these factors. However the aim of the AAP is to improve the whole area to create a new sustainable community. Therefore areas surrounding the estate, such as Walworth Road, Old Kent Road, and Burgess Park are taken into consideration when developing the plan for the area.

The AAP outlines that the new neighbourhood will have:

  • Mixed-tenure homes that are designed to very high space and quality standards.  There will be an emphasis on providing homes for families so they can make the most of the three new schools being re-built in the area – Michael Faraday Primary School, Walworth Academy and New School Aylesbury.
  • A range of building heights, with taller landmark buildings fronting Thurlow Street and Burgess Park and lower buildings near conservation areas.
  • Excellent private open space for every home.  There will also be attractive secure communal gardens and well planned public open space.  This will include green fingers, areas of open space which run from a new and improved Burgess Park into the community.
  • Improved public transport and a better area for walking and cycling.  We want to link up streets so that it is easier to move around the area.
  • Improved healthcare and community facilities to suit all ages and backgrounds, a better range and number of shops and more employment and learning opportunities – resulting in more jobs!
