Aylesbury Area Action Plan approved by Southwark Council's Assembly

4 February 2009

The £2.5 billion regeneration of one of London’s biggest and most well known estates got full council approval as Southwark Council’s Assembly agreed the last details required for the Aylesbury Area Action Plan (AAP).

A six-week consultation period will now take place in February and March 2009 for both residents and public bodies to comment on their thoughts on the AAP.

The plan along with any representations made will then be submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government for an independent examination by a government appointed planning inspector.

Southwark Council Executive Member for Regeneration, Councillor Paul Noblet, said: “This is an historic document for the council and for Aylesbury residents.

"For the last 10 years our united hopes and ambitions to regenerate the area have been pored over in such great detail that we all eat, sleep and dream planning regulations.

“The council has had tremendous support and cooperation from the residents, who have turned out in all weathers to countless meetings and told us what they think of the Area Action Plan.

“The council has done everything it could to listen to the views of residents and adapt the plan to fit their wishes.

“This is the first Area Action Plan that Southwark and its residents have developed, and I am sure that the spirit of cooperation that has been evident throughout the process is what has got us to this point.”

A deputation of residents attended the meeting last night to demonstrate their support for the plan, which represents a major milestone in the redevelopment of the Aylesbury Estate.

At the meeting, Creation Trustee and Chair of Aylesbury TRA Jean Bartlett said: “Many residents have been involved in the Area Action Plan over the last three years. It has been a long process, but we feel that the council has listened to our views and comments.

"In particular, the reduction in density and the height of some of the proposed blocks to enable more family houses to be built has pleased many people.

“We now want to see the plan delivered as soon as possible.”

Tony Taitte, Chair of Aylesbury New Deal for Communities (NDC) said: “This is an exciting day for the people of the Aylesbury. The NDC has delivered many improvements to their lives through social and economic projects and the redevelopment of the estate will only add to a growing sense of well being.

“This is an excellent foundation for the work of the NDC to continue through its successor body the Creation Trust.”
