A group of 10 Aylesbury Future Leaders visited the Stonebridge Estate in Brent, which is an area also undergoing regeneration. The main reason for the trip was to meet with the young people from Stonebridge and to learn from their experiences and see what can be implemented in Aylesbury’s regeneration. Stonebridge is a scheme which is close to completion, whereas Aylesbury is at the beginning.
They met with young people to discuss what it’s like living through a regeneration process and took a tour of the estate, looking at both housing and urban design, so they can feed back into the design of their new community. This was an important visit for the Future Leaders because it gave them first hand experience of how regeneration can affect an area, for example the social and economic benefits, also what it feels like to live surrounded by building sites.
From the visit the Future Leaders learned that regeneration is not just about new buildings. Community facilities and social programmes are essential. Another important lesson is to ensure that services e.g. services are maintained during the construction phase.
The Aylesbury Future Leaders has been established by Southwark Council to empower and educate young people as part of the Aylesbury regeneration process. Young people have joined the group voluntarily as they want to input into the regeneration of their new community, influencing the design of new homes, open spaces and community facilities - in particular those for young people.
