L and Q on board to build the first phase of the Aylesbury

7 February 2008

Southwark Council has selected the London and Quadrant (L&Q) Group to build and manage the first phase of the massive regeneration programme (at the site known as phase 1a).

This will include 260 new homes, commercial units and a state-of-the art Aylesbury Resource Centre, which will provide facilities for people with sensory, neurological and physical disabilities, along with health and therapy services, adult education, employment support, and IT.

Building is expected to start on-site in Autumn 2008 and the development is expected to be completed by 2013.

The selection of L&Q Group follows 18 months of consultation and competition, and the successful applicant was chosen - subject to contract and EU procurement requirements - from a shortlist including six others. Aylesbury residents were members of a selection panel that chose the successful bidder.

Cllr Richard Thomas, Southwark Council's executive member for regeneration, said: "This selection is a great step forward for the Aylesbury homes and shows that the council is still firmly behind the vision for the area. We have chosen L&Q as they have a proven track record in delivering high-quality housing and we want phase 1a to set a benchmark for the entire regeneration programme.

"I would also like to thank all the local residents who played a very important role during consultation. They will be the ones living in the new homes and it is important that they meet their expectations of spacious comfortable housing and excellent facilities.

"I would like to reassure residents that we are wholly committed to the Aylesbury regeneration project but the council has to be realistic about what it can commit to. We have already made substantial progress and will continue with current projects - building of 260 new homes and a resource centre.

"However, with the funding settlement we have received from the government we will need additional money from the central government to complete the project. We are lobbying the government hard to ensure the scheme moves forward as planned."

Don Wood, Chief Executive of the L&Q Group, said: "We are delighted at the prospect of being Southwark Council's partner to carry out the first phase of the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate. This is a great opportunity to deliver the aspirations of local people. We look forward to working in partnership with the council and the local community to bring about real and positive change for residents.

"Our approach to regeneration is to improve the quality of life for residents in London's more deprived neighbourhoods. At Aylesbury we will work hard to deliver a range of quality new homes, excellent services, and significant levels of new investment into the local community and economy."
