The redevelopment of the Aylesbury – one of the biggest housing estates in Europe – received a major boost on December 18, with the first site receiving full planning permission.
A striking scheme of 260 new homes for Aylesbury residents, along with a state-of-the-art resource centre, was given the go-ahead.
Current residents have been involved in the designs to ensure they get spacious homes. The resource centre will provide facilities for people with sensory, neurological and physical disabilities, along with health and therapy services, adult education, employment support, and IT.
Building is expected to start on-site in Autumn 2008.
The scheme is part of the overall first phase of development for the Aylesbury regeneration (also known as phase 1a) that has already received outline planning approval. It has been designed by Levitt Bernstein Associates, and will see a total of 260 new homes built in the southwest corner of the Aylesbury Estate. The overall scheme is expected to be completed in 2013.
A housing association will be selected to build and manage all the housing for the phase 1a site early next year.
Cllr Richard Thomas, Southwark Council’s executive member for regeneration, said: “We are really focussed on improving Southwark for local people, and this is another significant step forward.
“The approval for Aylesbury is an important milestone, and I am particularly proud of the way local people have been involved in the design process. Providing new homes and facilities on this site has to meet current residents’ wishes, and by consulting every step of the way, we will end up with a great neighbourhood.”
